Chessboards

I've seen a few youtube videos over the last couple years that I've been really impressed by and have inspired me to make a couple chessboards.  I would have to say I've been most inspired by the chessboard that Mike McCory at the Wood U Make It  Youtube Channel and Neil Pask at the Pask Makes Channel.

So this year I decided to make a Chessboard for my mother-in-law so that she could play chess against my father-in-law, and well because its fun to make things.

So I got started by deciding what lumber to use.  I dug through my wood supply and picked out some Walnut and some White Oak.

Cut the pieces down and started gluing them up.  For one of the chessboards I had to glue the White Oak up to make it large enough to make the two inch squares.

Then I started gluing the contrasting woods together, cutting them down, gluing them up until I had the stock so that it was 8 segments alternating wide.  Then I would start slicing them into just over 1/8th inch thick and gluing them end to end.

Once I had the sliced up end grain faces glued together.  I glued them down to some 3/4 inch plywood to keep it stable.

Finished with a coat of Shellac and several coats of water based poly sprayed on.
